Congratulations! If you are reading this you have decided to use the Tangem Backup xApp to create a backup for you XRP Ledger account.
This is a very wise decision! Creating a backup is one of the best ways to keep your crypto safe.
Once you have successfully completed this procedure, you should also consider reviewing this article:
It discusses other recommended procedures to help protect your funds.
Before you get started
Before you can use the Tangem Backup xApp, you need two things:
- An account on the XRP Ledger that is currently imported into XUMM and has been activated with at least 10 XRP. It can be another card account or a non-card account. Either one will work.
- A XUMM Tangem card that that has been imported into XUMM.
For most people, they will choose to use two Tangem cards to do this procedure.
While we have tried to make this procedure as easy as possible, we find that the single, biggest difficulty people make is that they do not import their two cards into Xumm before beginning the process. This is a critical step! If you are going to create a backup, both cards have to be imported into XUMM.
As well, one of the cards need to be activated with 10 XRP. The 2nd card does NOT need to be activated.
If you do not know how to do this, please see this video:
Throughout this article we refer to "Card 1" and "Card 2" to differentiate between them.
- "Card 1" is the card the you will activate with 10 XRP. This account will hold your XRP and your other assets. You can label it anything you like XUMM. (ie. "Savings" or "Spending Account", etc.) but this account is your primary account.
- "Card 2" will be your daily sign card. It will be used to sign transactions on "Card 1" Again, you can label it anything you like in XUMM. ("Signing card" or "Savings signing card" or whatever you like) For people use the transparent card as their daily signing card but both cards function identically so you can decide which one you would like to use.
Start by launching XUMM and pressing the "x√" button at the button of the screen.
Next press Tangem Backup.
(If it is not listed there, press the "View more xApps" button and the Tangem Backup xApp should be listed on the follow screen.)
Alternatively, you can scan this QR code using XUMM:
Welcome to the Tangem Backup xApp
You should be at this screen.
Press the "I'm ready, continue" button and you should see this screen:
This is where you get to choose your primary card. This is the one that has been activated with at least 10 XRP. When you have completed the steps in this article, this is the card that will be stored away in a safe place. We refer to it here as Card 1.
Press Select account.
Slide to accept and close the confirmation screen. You should then see this screen:
This is where you choose your backup card. This is the one that does not need to be activated. Most people use the transparent card as their backup card. When have completed the steps in this article, this is the card that you will use to sign transactions on Card 1's account. We refer to it here as Card 2.
Press Select back up card.
Slide to accept and close the confirmation screen.
Note: If you receive this screen:
it usually means that you did not select the backup card account in Xumm. You need to press the down arrow and select the backup card from the list. In the above steps, you will notice the first time you scanned the scan you were signed in on the Card 1 account for the second card to had to sign in on the Card 2 account.
You will see this screen:
Press the "Next Step (finish) button". You will see this screen:
Slide to accept then sign the transaction with Card 1.
Congratulations you did it!
So what do I do now? How do I use the cards?
Now that you have completed the process, you have the option to sign transactions on Card 1's account with either Card 1 or Card 2.
After you create the transaction, then "Slide to accept" you should see this screen:
To confirm, you can now use both Card 1 and Card 2 to sign transactions on Card 1's account.
If you lose or damage either card, you can use the other card to move your funds off of Card 1's account to another XRPL account. While this will work, we strongly suggest you review this article for more information on how to use your cards
But I have more cards and I want to set them up as backups as well!
Unfortunately you can not do this on the XRP Ledger. You can only have one backup per account. You can create another primary account, then create another backup card for that account, but you can not have a second or third backup card for one account.
What is the difference between the two cards?
Functionally, all Xumm Tangem cards are identical. Visually, they have different appearances.
We understand that you might have additional questions regarding this procedure so you are welcome to contact us any time via the XUMM Support xApp in XUMM or you can simply scan this QR code with XUMM and be directed there automatically.
