A procedure to recover access to an account with only the secret numbers
When creating accounts, XUMM offers two security levels: bio-metric (suitable for holding smaller amounts intended to be used more frequently) and password (higher security but somewhat harder to use).
This article is for accounts set to use passwords only and does not apply to accounts using bio-metric security.
The procedure below allows users to recreate the account which provides an opportunity to input a new password.
Before starting |
Have a copy of the secret numbers ready to use. It is a good idea to have a pen and paper. This will take 15-20 minutes minimum and will require full concentration. |
Remove the Account from XUMM
-
Click the gear icon at the bottom-right of the home screen to open the Settings screen
-
Select Accounts
-
Select the 'Edit' option on the account to be deleted
-
Select 'Remove from Xumm' (in red at the bottom of the screen)
-
Select 'Yes, I'm Sure' on the warning screen
Recreate the Account in XUMM
-
Click the gear icon at the bottom-right of the home screen to open the Settings screen
-
Select Accounts
-
Select '+ Add Account'
-
Select 'Import existing account'
-
The next screen defaults to the correct choice - 'Full Access' - so just touch the Next button
-
The next screen defaults to the correct choice - 'Secret Numbers' - so just touch the Next button. If you want to re-import a previously imported CSC account, see this FAQ.
-
Input the secret numbers from the original account using the '+/-' buttons to change the number and the '>' to move to the next number.
-
The next screen asks about security level. The choices are 'biometric' (face scan/fingerprint) or password (which is more secure).
-
Choose 'Password'
-
Input a trading password long enough to be difficult to guess.
Good idea to work it out on paper first.
If upper-case letters or non-alphanumeric symbols (like !@#$) are used to make the password then they will have to be input EXACTLY the same way when doing a transaction. The same goes for any space characters. -
Confirm the password and hit next
-
Copy the public address if you want in the next screen
-
Provide a label for the account
Store the secret numbers and the password securely offline.
Offline or 'cold' storage is outside the scope of this article. There are several methods each having pros and cons.
Anyone who has access to the credentials (secret numbers, password) has control of the digital assets in that account. There is no way to recover digital assets lost in this manner.
